The Big Business of Disease

The United States is the country with the highest health spending in the world, and yet millions of people lack adequate access to medical care. It’s not a lack of technology or infrastructure, but a system designed to enrich corporations and drug companies at the expense of the population.

Drug companies have hijacked the health care system. They not only control drug prices, but participate in a cycle of corruption in which insurers, hospitals, and politicians benefit from a market based on disease, not prevention. While in other countries essential drugs are affordable, in the U.S. the same drug can cost up to ten times more.

Why? Because the industry buys influence. Drug companies fund political campaigns, lobby lawmakers, and manipulate regulations to maintain their dominance. The FDA, in theory a regulator, often seems to act more as an accomplice than an enforcer.

The Price of Not Reforming the System

The result of this corruption is clear:

Millions of Americans die or suffer unnecessarily due to lack of access to affordable treatments.

Bankruptcy due to medical expenses is a reality for thousands of families every year.

Innovation in treatments is compromised, as the priority is not health, but profitability.

The Future:

The good news is that the United States is still an incredible country and the private sector can save us. Every year startups are formed that work hard to make the world a better place. I started Mederi KOI in 2022 in my bedroom because I believed that access to health should be a right, not a privilege. Since then we have been determined to develop accessible solutions for all, breaking with the corruption of the system.
The rise of more inclusive and accessible health models brings us closer to a future where treatments will not be a luxury, but a fundamental right. The collaboration between science, technology and philanthropy can build an equitable and efficient health ecosystem.

Swimming against the tide is difficult, but it is the only way to a world where health is not just a business, but a fundamental pillar for humanity.
